MATT HENDRY
POST PRODUCTION
AD NO.1

I think the post production of this particular ad went well. It started with me simply looking at the footage and deciding which parts of which clips looked best. I then sorted through and decided what clips I would actually use in the final video. After doing this, I got the part of the song that I wanted and put it onto my timeline. I began to then block out time for each shot in my timeline and made most of the cuts to the beat of the song. Following this, I did some speed ramping to add interest to my shots, I think it was a nice touch that actually adds a lot to the video. It was then time for colour correction to make sure the shots match and then colour grading.

As you can see, I went for a very high contrast, moody look. This was partly because I needed to crush the blacks so the background would not be visible but it was also a stylistic choice. I also made the overall temperature a bit cooler and made the blues more of a teal colour. Here are some before and after shots:

After colour correction, I was almost done. I just had a few things to tidy up. Some reflections on the edge of the glass could be seen throughout the video, so I had to mask them out frame by frame. This took some time but wasn't too bad. I then added the logos at the end and animated them to the beat of the song.
AD NO.2
This ad was the more complicated of the two to edit. Like the first, I started by sorting all the footage and deciding which clips I would use. I then dragged my song onto my timeline, which I wasn't too happy with but the website I was using for music wouldn't let me download any more songs without paying. Again, I then roughly blocked out where I thought each clip should go in the edit, knowing I would refine it all later. This took a lot of shifting around until I was happy with the pacing (sort of, I was never really happy with the pacing but I'll go over that in the evaluation).

I then started to refine everything and start with the visual effects. I did the chromakeying in after effects because it was more complex and I had some masking to do. I was planning on tracking some dust particles into the shot, however, the 3D camera solve didn't seem to work, despite me marking out X's on the greenscreen. I had to go for an infinite black look instead because I hadn't used a tripod and the tracking wouldn't work. In desperate circumstances normally, I go through frame by frame but unfortunately, I don't have time.

The greenscreen footage was the part of the video that looked the worst in my opinion but unfortunately, it is now the day before the due date and I don't have time to reshoot it. After doing all of this, I moved onto colour correction and colour grading. This also proved to be a challenge because the gym footage and the greenscreen footage were shot on different cameras with different lighting (normally I would be more aware of this when shooting but the time frame caused this issue). The lighting in the gym also kept changing because there were automatic lights that kept turning on and off that I unfortunately couldn't control. Here are some before and after examples:

After completing the colour grading, the video was basically finished. Not at a standard I was happy with, mind you, but this was caused mostly by the way it was shot and not things that could be easily solved in the edit. Just a few tweaks to pacing were made. Since writing all of this, I have gone back and masked out all of the markers that were going to be used as tracking points.
